Paola and Louisburg officials on the Marais des Cygnes Public Utility Authority Board will have to wait a few extra weeks for completion of the new water plant southeast of Paola.

Board members who met Monday morning in Paola learned that inclement weather and other delays have pushed back the previously scheduled July completion date to Aug. 1.

John Brummer of Bartlett and West Engineers reported that Walters-Morgan Construction had requested 50 extra days on its contract, but the engineering firm calculated that the water utility contractor is due only 10 extra days.

After some discussion, the board approved Walters-Morgan’s pay request for $557,532.68 and agreed to extend the contract by 10 days.

They also approved a request for a release of retainage in the amount of $173,086.06 to pipeline contractor J&N Utilities, leaving a remainder of $117,963.30. In construction, retainage is payment that is held back until work has been completed. Board members learned that pressure testing had been completed, and water disinfection is ready to begin.

A payment of $156,148 to Caldwell Tanks was approved for PUA’s east water tower, subject to review and approval by Bartlett and West.

In other business, the board authorized payment of no more than $2,000 to Miami County for dust abatement, a $4,650 contract with Mann Fence Co. to fence the lagoon, creation of credit accounts with G.S. Robins for bulk chemicals and Praxair for gas and chemicals, amendment and adoption of various operational policies, and adoption of a water drought and emergency resolution per request by the Kansas Water Office.

Resolutions for revision and acceptance of the water conservation plan and revision of operating contracts for both Louisburg and Paola were tabled until the next meeting.
