Kim Smith, who co-owns the refuse company with her husband, Larry, said Friday about 100 residents had signed up for the recycling service thus far, but added the company was signing up new subscribers each day. For an extra $3 per month, residents can add curbside recycling to their trash service. The recyclables do not have to be presorted in the blue bin that L&K provides to each recycling customer. Instead, the items are intermingled in the bins — which are about the size of a large suitcase — and picked up by an L&K truck, which hauls the recyclables to the Town & Country Recycling Center in Harrisonville, Mo., where they are sorted. L&K Service added another truck to its fleet to handle the recycling pick-ups. “We are trying to make it as easy for the customer as possible,” Kim Smith said. “We are picking up the recycling bins on Tuesday, the same day as our regular service, so customers will not have to get used to a new schedule. And customers do not have to sort their recyclables, just put them in the recycling bin. They are sorted at the recycling center.” L&K Service will accept all recyclables except glass. Because of the co-mingling nature of the service, Smith said the risk of broken glass getting mixed in with other recycled items is too great. Smith is hopeful the service will catch on in Louisburg. “People see the blue bins, and they ask their neighbors about it, and word of mouth spreads. I think it will be a gradual process,” Smith said. After the stock market crashed, the market for recyclables also took a tumble. Smith thinks the market for recycled items will make a comeback. But she said that’s not the company’s chief interest in starting the program. “We figured whatever we can get the community to recycle, it keeps that trash from going into the landfill,” Smith said. Smith said customers who pay the recycling fee can ask for more than one bin at no additional charge. “We want to encourage recycling.” Customers can call and sign up for the service, 837-4637, or they can stop by L&K’s office, 510 S. First St. “They can pick up their recycling bin at our office, or we’ll deliver it to their doorstep, whichever they prefer,” Smith said. L&K Service plans to have a booth set up at the city’s annual fishing derby June 20 at City Lake to encourage recycling and teach youths what items can be recycled. “We want to teach kids about recycling, too, and hopefully they will go home and encourage their parents to recycle,” Smith said. The Smiths wanted to start the company’s curbside recycling program in Louisburg. If successful, the company likely will offer the program in other areas as well. “Our roots are in Louisburg, and we wanted to start the program here first,” Kim Smith said. “We wanted to offer the service to the community which has been so good to us through the years.”
