Miami County retail businesses and restaurants may have a busy night Friday when 850 bicyclists are scheduled to pedal into town during their final stop in the annual Biking Across Kansas event.

The 540-mile ride began Saturday and will conclude this weekend, when the riders will leave Paola on Saturday morning and cycle to the state line east of Louisburg, where they will finish and then enjoy a celebration picnic, according to a news release.

While in Paola, the bicyclists are scheduled to camp out in Paola on Friday night at Paola High School, where a number of volunteers also will be making laps around the track for Relay for Life.

Paola Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carol Everhart said a bus will provide transportation from the high school to Paola downtown businesses and restaurants from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Friday so the bicyclists can experience all that Paola has to offer.

Cyclers will then travel east from Paola on 311th Street, north on Metcalf Road and east on Kansas Highway 68 to the Kansas-Missouri state line before coming back to Louisburg’s Broadmoor Elementary School for a final lunchtime celebration.

The riders began the event at the Kansas-Colorado border west of Syracuse, and, in addition to Paola, the bicyclists were scheduled to make overnight stops in Syracuse, Garden City, Jetmore, St. John, Halstead, Eureka and Humboldt.
