Rhonda Tyson loves softball.

She loves to coach. She loves the intensity of the game and the competitiveness. But in the end, she just loved her family more.

Tyson resigned her position as head softball coach for Louisburg High School to spend more time with her family, more specifically her daughter Emily, who will be heading off to college soon. The Louisburg USD 416 school board accepted her resignation during Monday’s meeting.

“It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Tyson said. “Softball has been a huge part of my life since I was 7 years old. It’s a part of me and who I am. I love this game, and I thoroughly enjoy coaching it. The girls were just the icing on the cake for me. They were a great group of kids.”

Tyson spent the last six years as a coach with the program, including the last two as head coach. She helped lead the Wildcats to the substate semifinal game last season.

Although she enjoyed her time as an assistant, under then-coach Terry Tinich, she relished the opportunity to lead the Wildcats. But she also figured out the two positions were a lot different.

“There were a lot of extra responsibilities that went along with being the head coach that I didn’t realize,” she said. “It was pretty time consuming on game night just getting the stats done afterwards. I went through every game several times trying to make sure it was all done right. That part wasn’t so much fun, but being at practice every day and actually coaching the games was a huge rush for me. I have always been infatuated with this game.”

Tyson has several fond memories as Wildcat coach. She loved the two state tournament appearances she helped coach as an assistant, and she loved watching her players hit home runs.

But her favorite came on the next-to-last game of her career. Her Wildcats defeated Prairie View 7-5 in nine innings in the first round of substate last month.

“It was awesome,” Tyson said of the game. “The girls just kept fighting and never gave up. Great offense, defense and persistence finally paid off. I was so proud of those kids. It was a great game. I think I was as tired as they were when it was over.”
