The group left by bus May 26 and returned May 31 after visiting dozens of landmarks and historical places on the annual freshman trip to Washington, D.C. The bus made a scheduled stop to tour the Gettysburg Battlefield on the way to Washington, and on the return trip home, the ride included a stop at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Mo., so students could ride to the top of one of Missouri’s famous landmarks. While in Washington, students toured the National Archives, U.S. Navy Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Library of Congress, Capitol Building, Abraham Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Korean War Memorial, World War II Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, U.S. Marine Corps Memorial, Mount Vernon, the U.S. Air Force Memorial, the new Sept. 11 Pentagon Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Holocaust Museum, Old Post Office Pavilion, Ford’s Theatre and Peterson House, National Cathedral, Union Station, Hard Rock Café and Washington Monument. The Marine Barracks Evening Parade scheduled for May 29 was rained out, so the group went to the theater to see the movie “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” which was timely since they visited the Smithsonian museums the day before.
