Ever since the first day of practice, Genna Stambaugh was swinging away.

Stambaugh would spend hours in the batting cage and work on her swing back in March. She also spent a lot of time on her fielding in hopes of having a successful season in centerfield for the Wildcats.

It seems all that hard work finally paid off.

Stambaugh was recently named to the All-Frontier League softball first team and was one of two Wildcats to be honored. Freshman teammate Izzy Hastings earned honorable mention for her play at third base.

For Stambaugh, though, it was a fitting end to a perfect season.

“Individually, I felt fantastic with my playing,” Stambaugh said. “Hitting a .706 slugging average is impressive to me, and I wouldn’t want any different. It was a great honor.”

The slugging number wasn’t the only statistic that voted Stambaugh onto the first team. Stambaugh led the Wildcats with a .403 average and recorded seven doubles, five triples and had a home run.

On defense, the Louisburg senior had just two errors in 22 games in centerfield.

“I am thrilled for Genna,” former Louisburg softball coach Rhonda Tyson said. “She did a great job for us this year both in centerfield and at the plate. She is a great kid with a great personality. She was a team leader and was always there helping the younger kids out every chance she got.”

Hastings provided Louisburg some solid play at third base and brought another strong bat to the Wildcat lineup. Hastings finished the season with a .397 average, 23 hits, two doubles and nine RBIs.

Considering Hastings didn’t even come to the preseason softball meeting, Tyson wasn’t sure what to expect. Tyson got more than she bargained for with her freshman.

“(Izzy) was a big asset to us,” Tyson said. “She had played a tremendous amount of ball prior to moving to Louisburg. She is a very smart ball player both offensively and defensively. She played third base most of the year and did an exceptional job for us. I thought she should have been placed higher in the selection, and I think next year she will be if she continues to play the quality of ball that she displayed this year.”
