Although Chad Harvey is in his first year as a head coach of the Louisburg boys’ basketball team, it doesn’t look like it.

His practices and camps are structured. He is already working on relationships with his players, and he already has a good idea of what he wants to accomplish.

Harvey has spent several years as an assistant coach and has been chomping at the bit to get his chance at a head coaching position. Even though he has yet to coach his first official game, he already seems like the right fit for the job.

He has gone back to the basics with the Wildcat squad. There have been no offensive sets, no coaching a spot on the floor — just fundamentals. Fundamentals may be something that is taught in the younger grades, which is true, but it doesn’t hurt for a little refresher course.

“The biggest difference is just getting the fundamentals back,” he said. “We are learning how to jump stop, pull the ball through, and I am not worried about what kind of system we are going to run as far as an offensive set. I just want to teach them how to play basketball and not teach a spot.

“We are going to teach the jump stops, the shot fakes, being strong with the ball, pivots and all the other fundamentals we have to bring in to be able to play basketball. We just want to get them to slow down a little bit. We are getting so much better.”

Harvey is already excited about his program and what the possibilities hold for the upcoming season. He has a core group of seniors returning in Clayton Houchen, Drew Harding, Justin O’Brien, Ashton Dover and Zach Hildreth and has already brought back a couple more players who didn’t play last season.

Throw in varsity returners such as Kody Cook, David Embers and Garrett Griffin, and the Wildcats could have a solid team next season.

“I am very excited about them,” Harvey said of his team. “We have a good core of seniors coming back, and a couple are coming back that didn’t play last year. The leadership is real good. We have good kids. We have a few vocal leaders and a few who lead by example. Everything is set right now and I think the team is going to do very well.”

Harvey has everything rolling right now. Hopefully, with all the hard work and preparation, he, and the team, can roll up a few wins in the process.
