As Harrison Lanay ran to judge Dave Maddax on Saturday morning, the 6-year-old’s bluegill hopped out of his hands and onto the grass.

“He’s a slippery one,” the boy said before handing the fish over to Maddax to be measured.

“He’s five inches,” Maddax told him. “Go catch me another one.”

“I’ll try!” Harrison said before running back to his spot on the western bank of City Lake.

The 14th-annual Louisburg Fish’n Derby drew about 270 children up to age 16 who hoped to catch the big one.

Early reports indicated that a 17-inch channel catfish and a 19-inch bass were the big catches of the day, but if you asked 3-year-old Trevor Burch, his 12-inch channel catfish was really much bigger.

“It was this big,” he said as he and 4-year-old Cade Driskell extended their arms as wide as they could.

Out on the dam on the southern side of City Lake, Jayden Trester, 6, caught a wiggly one and quickly ran it over to the judge.

“I’m gonna call him Talkie, because he talks a lot,” Jayden said.

Down the bank, 3-year-old Brady Dowell got tired of fishing and left it to his older brother. He plopped down on the paved walkway and played with the worms provided as bait.

“I like ’em.” Brady said, dangling a long one between his index finger and thumb.

Once the end of the derby was signaled by flashing police lights and blowing sirens, the hundreds of children and their families en masse headed to the recently built shelter house for a hot-dog lunch.

Neil Spector and Pat Apple hurriedly pulled the “salty dogs” off the grill, and dozens of other volunteers kept them stocked as families went through the line, waiting to hear the results of the derby.

Children explored the inside of a Louisburg police car while Shane McClintock of Kansas City’s Q104 radio station entertained the crowd.

Each child who participated in the derby left with a bright yellow T-shirt and a prize — their choice of a tackle box, bobbers or a fishing pole.
