Family fun is in the works for July 4, when Louisburg’s annual Freedom Fest makes a return appearance.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. that Saturday, families will converge on Lewis-Young Park for an evening of fun and entertainment. Planned activities include a kiddie tractor pull, apple pie contest, dog-kissing contest, walk-in hot-air balloon, inflatables, music, food and more. There will be a flyover, and once dark hits, the yearly fireworks spectacular will commence.

The Freedom Fest planning committee is making a few changes this year. A revamped stage show, featuring emcee Craig Holtzen and BJ the DJ, is in the works.

The Olive’s Hope animal rescue group will be there with a dog safety demonstration and a dog-kissing contest featuring the ugliest, but most kissable, dog, Olive. Local officials — including Mayor Curt Shreckengaust, Kansas Rep. Jene Vickrey, Police Chief Ron Anderson and several Louisburg City Council members — will press their luck to see if they will be the lucky one to kiss the rescue group’s namesake.

“We’ll make sure she kisses them, too, even if it takes ice cream on the face or chicken nuggets over the ears,” said Carolyn Karns, an Olive’s Hope co-organizer.

Members of the public will be able to purchase votes for the person they would like to see kiss Olive.

Also new this year, Balloon Adventures will bring out a stationary hot-air balloon for kids to explore on the ground.

Most of the crowd favorites will be back, including door prizes and the Lion’s Club booths offering great food and free watermelon.

For the apple pie contest, anyone 14 to 114 is invited to make a pie to be auctioned to raise money for the Miami County Cancer Foundation. Sponsored by state Sen. Pat Apple, the contest will award ribbons for first, second and third place. Pies will be judged on taste, texture and appearance.

The planning committee wants to increase the variety and number of activities at the event, organizer Collyn Peterson said. All businesses, youth groups, churches, civic clubs and other organizations are encouraged to sponsor activities that appeal to the hundreds of families who attend the celebration. Those interested in sponsoring an activity should contact the Louisburg Chamber of Commerce office at 837-2826 to reserve booth space and to avoid duplication.

Donations in any amount can be sent to the Freedom Fund, City of Louisburg, 5 South Peoria, Suite 102, Louisburg, KS 66053. Donations for the door-prize drawing can be dropped off at the chamber office at 5 S. Peoria St.
