Residents who need a reliable form of transportation should take comfort in knowing that Louisburg Senior Center’s general public transportation program has a new van.

Director Beverly Steger said the center received a grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation to purchase a new van for the program.

“Our old van has over 200,000 miles on it,” she said.

The addition of the van gives the program three vehicles to transport senior citizens and anyone who needs a ride. In 2006, the senior center purchased a handicapped-accessible bus with a chair lift.

The vehicles are used to take residents to anywhere in Louisburg, or to medical and other necessary appointments in Paola and the Kansas City area, Steger said.

“We’re just so happy (to have the new van), because our old one is not going to last,” Steger said.

There is a suggested donation for using the transportation services, but anyone is allowed to use them on a first-call, first-served basis; to get a ride, call  837-5113.

“We’ll take anybody anywhere,” Steger said. “All they have to do is call.”
