Team King earned its crown Sunday at Lewis-Young Park in about every way possible.

To say King had some work to do might be an understatement.

The team, which went into the Louisburg Area Recreation Association 8-and-under baseball tournament as the No. 1 seed, saw its first loss of the season come at the hands of Team Wickersham during Saturday’s semifinals.

Team King went on to win its last game Saturday and advanced to the championship game Sunday afternoon to try and avenge its loss to Wickersham.

However, King had to beat Wickersham twice to have a shot at the title. After King won the first game, they found themselves down eight runs early in the second game.

Team King rallied for a 12-10 victory over Wickersham, and after it was all said and done, won four straight games to win the tournament title.

“I really couldn’t be prouder of these boys. They just played amazing,” coach Joey King said. “After we lost our first game against Wickersham, we could have had our heads down, but we didn’t, and the whole team played really hard.

“Sports really teaches you a lot of life lessons, and I think they all learned a lot. It taught them not to keep their head down and to never give up because you never know what will happen. This was a fun group to coach.”

Bret Minor, Cole Williams, Kohl Vogel, Grant King, Michael Rogers, Michael Waldron, Garrett Rolofson and Drake Brenner each had two hits for Team King. Waldron and Austin Moore each had a triple, while King, Williams and Rolofson each recorded a double.

Braden Aiken broke the game open late with a home run of his own, while Braden O’Brien and Caleb DeForest also recorded hits in the win.

Blue Kaplinger and Beckett Rasmussen each had a home run to lead the Wickersham bats. Chance Dubinick scored two runs for Wickersham, while Dillon Keegan, R.J. Matney, Matthew McIntyre and Luke Wickersham each scored a run.

Dylan Knipp, Brayden White, Mason Kinder, Jack Mick and Corbin Green also participated for Wickersham.
