LARA: Team Hill rallies for 10-and-under title

It was all a championship game was supposed to be.

Andy Hill’s and Dan Hankinson’s teams squared off in the title contest of the Louisburg Area Recreation Association 10-and-under tournament, and record-wise, they were the two best teams in the tournament.

Team Hill upset No. 1 seed Team Hankinson in the tournament semifinals, but the two teams eventually saw one another again Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Young Park. Hankinson had a two-run lead late in the final inning and was all ready to force another game in the double-elimination tournament.

It wasn’t meant to be.

Team Hill scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, and Jalen Whitfield smacked a game-winning single to score Carson Tappan to complete the 10-9 victory and the tourney title.

“I am so proud of these boys,” coach Hill said. “We were down, and they never gave up. They played hard and they played together. They never put their heads down and they just kept playing. It was a great game between two good teams. It was fun to watch.”

Tappan led the bats for Team Hill with two singles and a walk, and he scored all three times. Thomas San Agustin, Grant Harding, Whitfield, Devin Drake and Matthew Rison all had hits in the win. Jake Hill also walked twice and scored two times.

Harding, Whitfield and Jake Hill all pitched the team to victory. Hill pitched a scoreless fifth inning to keep his team in the game. To get to the championship game, Team Hill won its opener 12-2 and beat Hankinson in the semifinals 14-3.

For Team Hankinson, Dalton Stone led the way offensively. Stone tallied three hits, including a double. Korbin Hankinson, Joseph Hannah, Sammy Wheeler and Calvin Lackey all had hits as well.

Sam Guetterman and Watson Loyd reached base with walks. Guetterman, Stone, Hannah and Hankinson all pitched in the contest.

Members of Team Hill are: Michael Finley, Matthew Rison, Alex Stephens, Carson Tappan, Devin Drake, Jake Hill, Matthew Holloway, Thomas San Agustin, Grant Harding, Jalen Whitfield and Zach Price.

Members of Team Hankinson are: Korbin Hankinson, Sam Guetterman, Joseph Hannah, Dalton Stone, Mitchel Drew, Dylan Trester, Watson Loyd, Sammy Wheeler, Gunnar Baldwin, Calvin Lackey, Ryan Adams and Ben Minster.
