With excessive 90-degree temperatures last week, it was not the ideal time to run great distances.

Runners who attended the Louisburg cross country camp didn’t seem to mind much, however.

Wildcat coach John Reece conducted his yearly summer camp that sent several participants out and about in Louisburg — some longer distances than others. But, in any case, the runners spent an hour each morning getting in shape for what could be a special season for some.

Reece’s camp drew about 22 runners each day, which was a few more than he expected. He was definitely excited about the turnout and how the camp progressed.

“It was a great camp,” Reece said. “It was a lot cooler at 8 a.m. We got the team together and started them running. They were all given a training schedule for the rest of the summer.”

The runners got in shape last week by running up and down Fifth Street, while others ran on the gravel at Rockville Road and 287th Street, and around City Lake.

Reece hopes his runners keep to the schedule, and if they do, he sees some good things happening by the time practice starts Aug. 17. The Wildcats have some good possibilities team-wise.

Senior Conner Hopkins returns after qualifying for state his junior year, and sophomore Nic Crotts gained some good experience as a freshman. On the girls’ side, newcomer Shayla McElyea could contribute right away and help teammates such as Gwen Baumgardner and Kristen Fisher among others.

“The possibilities are endless,” Reece said of his team. “It is up to the individuals on how much they want to improve. We had some new faces that might be going out for cross country. If so, both boys and girls teams will be stronger than last year. There were a few not at camp because of other commitments.

“We will continue to condition through the rest of the summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So if there are any students interested they can come join us or come any way to get in shape.”
