Vickrey, who volunteered his time — and his cheek — to help Olive’s Hope animal rescue’s fund-raiser, was the winner of a big, wet kiss from Chara, organizer Carolyn Karns’ dog. “That dog’s tongue is this big,” Police Chief Ron Anderson said, holding his hands about a foot apart while looking at a photo of Chara with her tongue flopping out the side of her mouth. Vickrey, Anderson, Karns, City Administrator Jeff Cantrell, City Council members Glena Windisch and Steve Ward, and Mayor Curt Shreckengaust volunteered to be the choices in the animal rescue group’s “Kiss the Ugly Dog” contest. Members of the public could purchase votes for $1 and make their choice for who would have to kiss Chara. Original plans called for the winner to kiss Olive, the group’s namesake, but Olive came down with a bout of allergies, and Karns’ dog Chara was there to take her place. “(Chara) will kiss anything. She leads with the tongue,” Karns said as she fed her a few dog treats. “We’re working her up to get some froth going.” It was a close race between Vickrey and Anderson to see who would get the pleasure of kissing Chara. Vickrey received 19 votes to Anderson’s 13. Shreckengaust received 6; Windisch, 1; Cantrell, 1; Karns, 1; and Ward, 0. About 8:30 p.m., Vickrey took center stage and offered up his cheek to the eager Chara. “That wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” he said afterward. “Of the honors I’ve been bestowed, that’s one I’ll remember.”
