The local celebration surrounding Labor Day weekend has become one of Louisburg’s calling cards, and this year’s event promises a bit of fun and excitement for families and residents of all ages. Sponsored by John P. Hand American Legion Post 250, the festivities are a local tradition that span generations, and post commander Wayne Knop said his organization is aware of the importance placed on it by the community. “It’s a family outing,” he said. “There’s a lot of families who will have their family reunions and stuff, and Labor Day is when they meet up. They’ll come down (to Lewis-Young Park) to eat and have fun. You see a lot of people on Labor Day that you won’t see again until next Labor Day.” The fun kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, with the start of the 38th annual tractor pull at Lewis-Young Park. Friday’s competition will feature diesel pickups, antique tractors and a few “modified hot rod tractors,” Knop said. Competition continues at 7 p.m. Saturday with super stock tractors, pro stock tractors, modified tractors and a host of other tractor and truck classes. The event culminates on Monday with an all-day Labor Day celebration, beginning with the annual parade at 10 a.m. Following the parade, the party shifts back to Lewis-Young Park, where the Legion will host a kiddie tractor pull, in addition to prize-filled games of bingo, train rides, water slides and other activities for the whole family to enjoy. In addition to selling barbecue chicken dinners, the Ladies Auxiliary will also host the first Ron Weers Apple Pie Contest. Traditional two-crust pies will be accepted, with an entry fee of $5 due by 3 p.m. that day. Judging will follow at 5 p.m., and first prize will be half of the total entry fees. A raffle will put a cap on the celebration at 7 p.m. Monday night, when the local Legion post will offer cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200; the American Legion Riders will offer cash prizes of $250, $150 and $100; and the Sons of the American Legion will offer a Remington 1100 Classic Trap 12 gauge shotgun, a $500 gift certificate for tires at White’s Automotive, $200 cash and a Weber BBQ grill. Preparations for the celebration have become a nine-month affair, Knop said, and without the help of the Sons of the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, they simply wouldn’t be able to handle the workload. Fortunately, it’s all for a good cause — the event represents one of the largest fund-raisers for the organization each year. “And most all of our money, we try and keep it all local,” Knop said. “We spend a lot of money on Boys State, Girls State, boy scouts and girl scouts. That’s the Legion’s function, is to help the kids.” Admission to the Friday night tractor pull is $10 for adults, $5 for children with those under 10 getting in for free. Admission to Saturday night’s competition is $15 for adults, $10 for children with those under 10 again admitted free of charge. For more information, contact American Legion Post 250 at 837-2369.
