UPDATE Local authorities still are searching for three suspects who allegedly opened fire with rifles while Miami County Sheriff’s Office detectives were conducting an investigation in a field northeast of Fontana on Wednesday morning. Sheriff’s Office vehicles rushed out of Paola at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after the reports of shots fired. Sheriff’s Detective Mike Talcott said officers were in the field when an older-model white pickup truck carrying three men, described as Hispanic, pulled up. The suspects used rifles to fire eight to 10 shots before leaving the scene, he said. Talcott said he could not confirm if the shots were fired at the officers. The officers, who were on foot, did not return fire, he said. No injuries were reported. Sheriff’s personnel and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers quickly established a perimeter around the area, but the suspects have not been captured, Talcott said. Following the incident, authorities set up a command center in the parking lot of Fontana Christian Church at 38333 Hedge Lane. Several vehicles, including eight Highway Patrol cars and canine units, a handful of Sheriff’s Office vehicles and a couple of Miami County Emergency Medical Services vehicles were stationed at the command center. Sheriff Frank Kelly could be seen speaking with several members of his department’s Special Operations Response Team. Talcott confirmed Thursday morning that no arrests related to the incident have been made, but officers did recover a pickup at a nearby residence. Talcott said officers believe it is the pickup that was used in the shooting, but the suspects were not found. The officers did interview people at the residence, and one person was arrested on an outstanding warrant unrelated to the shooting, Talcott said.
