The Louisburg family of schools lost one of their own this weekend, after 19-year-old Zachary Messmer was struck by a train near Drexel, Mo. According to a crash report released by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Messmer was walking near tracks belonging to Kansas City Southern at approximately midnight on Sunday, near 319th Street and Davenport Road, when the incident occurred. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:44 a.m. by an agent of the Jackson County medical examiner’s office. Messmer, a 2008 graduate of Louisburg High School, was actively involved in athletics and other school activities during his time as a Wildcat, said LHS Principal Dave Tappan, noting that it’s always hard to see a life taken so unexpectedly. “All of us worked with Zach in a lot of different ways,” Tappan said. “We all watched a young man grow up in front of us, and to have his life taken away at such an early age is what shocks us and saddens us.” As his coach on the soccer team, Ben York valued Messmer’s abilities on the field, but his personality off it even more. “He was a four-year player for me, and one of my favorite players I would have to say,” York said. “He was very very talented, and not only that but he was a good friend of mine after he graduated.” Many of the juniors and seniors on the 2009 squad had the opportunity to play with Messmer for two years, York noted, which adds an extra element of emotion to the rest of the season. Heading into Monday’s matchup with Kansas City Piper High School, the team decided to wear arm bands in Messmer’s memory, and to dedicate the rest of the season to him. “He was just kind of one of those people that when you were in a bad mood, you would hang around him because he would make you feel better,” he said. “Not everyone has that quality.”
