1922-2009

Maudie Mattie Ellen Blacketer Hughbanks, 86, died Sept. 19, 2009, at North Point Nursing Home in Paola.

She was born Oct. 27, 1922, in Follett, Texas, to Raymond Ernest and Fareda Elizabeth Gifford Blacketer. She was baptized Dec. 10, 1922, at St. Peter’s Church in Woodward, Okla.
Maudie married Leo Ray Hughbanks on July 1, 1939, in Maryville, Mo. She was a housewife and crew cook for whatever farm her husband worked for. On Nov. 26, 1940, their daughter, Lola E. Hughbanks, was born. They moved to Topeka where Maudie worked for several restaurants, the Red Rooster, Tenpenny Café and a couple others over the years. When her husband had a stroke in 1970, Maudie was his cheerleader and moral support. She went to work, then straight to the hospital to help take care of him. When he was released, she helped him with his therapy and retraining process.

In 1971 Maudie and Leo moved their trailer to Paola to the Wolf farm. Maudie worked and helped in the garden, as well as taking care of her husband Leo and her three grandchildren.
In 1972, her son-in-law, John D. Wolf, died. Maudie stepped in and took over caring for her three grandchildren. This meant feeding them, doing their laundry, getting them to school functions and anything else that might come up. She was a wonderful caregiver and will be long remembered for her contribution to their lives.

Maudie worked at the Palomino Club as the cook for several years until it closed, when she started cooking at the Paola Country Club. She worked there until her health failed and she had to retire at the age of 62. She was a fantastic cook and did cooking on the side. She was famous for her cookies, pies, and cinnamon rolls. She also baked and decorated cakes. She was still able to cook and bake until 2001.
After her husband died on Nov. 29, 1983, she moved to the Sunflower II Apartments where she lived until a fall and problems during rehab caused her to move to a nursing home. She loved to have people over to visit and would always cook them a meal. She was the perfect hostess.

She loved to cook, read, sew, embroider and do crafts, which she loved to share when guests arrived. She made several lap blankets to give to hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities. She was always baking cookies for the many functions her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in. Family was very important to Maudie, so much so that she kept a photo album near her for her enjoyment. She loved to do puzzles, play Yahtzee, and Upwards, especially during the holiday family gatherings.

Maudie spent the last eight years of her life living at North Point Nursing Home. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Maudie was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Fareda Blacketer; three brothers, Charles Raymond, James Glenn, and William Earl Blacketer; her husband, Leo Ray Hughbanks; her daughter, Lola E. Wolf; and a granddaughter, Danni L. Wolf Kuhn.

Surviving her are two sisters, Rose E. Davis of Topeka and Margaret Deloris Brownfield of Marshall, Mo.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
