After years of planning, months of construction and weeks of fine-tuning, Louisburg and Paola are now officially purchasing water from the Marais des Cygnes Public Utility Authority.

Louisburg switched over to PUA water last week, and City Administrator Jeff Cantrell said besides some extra overtime from his staff to get the plant up and running, the transition has been very smooth.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

Paola City Manager Jay Wieland said the city officially switched over on Oct. 6, just one day after a PUA board meeting in which the officials mapped out a handful of final details to correct before going full-steam ahead.

Public Works Director Gerry Bieker said he is extremely happy with the quality of the water, and he already has heard people comment on how much they like it.

“We’ve eliminated some of the issues we’ve had in the past,” he said.

The city installed pressure-reducing valves throughout the city to keep the water from the new PUA lines from damaging the older water lines throughout Paola, and Bieker said they have worked well.
“We’re very excited. It’s high-quality water,” Paola Mayor Artie Stuteville said. “It’s one of the biggest projects we’ve ever had.”
Paola already has shut down its old water plant, and the city had been buying water from Miami County Rural Water District No. 2 through an interconnect. Louisburg was using its old water plant up until last week’s transition.

Both cities joined together to form the Marais des Cygnes PUA, which has funded the project. The PUA built a water plant on a 40-acre tract near the northwest corner of 343rd Street and Victory Road. Two new water towers and 17 miles of pipeline also have been constructed to serve the cities.
