Lenly T. Hopkins Jr., M.D., 78, Bucyrus, died on his farm, doing what he loved, on Oct. 16, 2009, of a ruptured aneurysm.

He was born Dec. 11, 1930, in Washington, D.C., to Theresa Owens and Lenly T. Hopkins Sr., D.V.M.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and attended medical school at both the University of Missouri and the University of Cincinnati, eventually completing his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Hopkins practiced medicine and general surgery in the Johnson County area for 32 years. Upon his retirement, he retired to his farm in Bucyrus where he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, woodworking, his Black Angus cattle and his garden.

He dedicated his life to his family and friends.
On Oct. 16, 1964, he married his wife of 45 years, Karen S. Stanley, and they became parents to Kathleen Jones, M.D., Jan Marrs and Ann Herrick, all of whom survive him. Survivors also include his brother William O. Hopkins, M.D., sisters Elizabeth A. Moherman and Joanne Owens, and his grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO 64131, (816) 942-2004.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 9500 Wornall Rd., followed by burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the school in Guatemala where he did medical missionary work in care of Colonial Presbyterian Church, 9500 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO 64114 with Lenly T. Hopkins Jr., M.D. Memorial in the memo.
