This week is a busy one within the city of Louisburg and, of course, the Halloween holiday is at the center of most of the action. On Friday, beginning at 5 p.m., the Louisburg Police Department will cordon off Broadway Street, and give families the chance to bring their children down to trick-or-treat a day early, with many of the small businesses that help Louisburg thrive. We at the Herald will, of course, be there, armed with four massive bags of candy that we would hate to see go to waste. And, for our younger readers, believe us — it’s the good stuff. The Leo’s Club at Louisburg High School is also hoping to use the spirit of the season to do some good within the community, with a pair of weekend events. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., student volunteers will be among those manning stations, along with the help of the Community Blood Center of Kansas City, at the LHS gymnasium for the school’s third annual Community Blood Drive. With three-day blood supplies nearing a critical level, the Community Blood Center needs almost 600 donors a day to ensure that hospitals in Kansas City and the surrounding area can meet their needs. According to their Web site, 99 percent of all donations made to the Community Blood Center stay local, and a single donation can help two patients in need. That’s making a difference. Additionally, if a group of non-costumed high school students happen to knock on your door Saturday morning, don’t reach for the candy. These aren’t your average trick-or-treaters. They’re members of the Leo’s Club, on the hunt for donations of canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Agape food center. This is the second year that the club has organized their philanthropic take on trick-or-treating, and senior Kaitlin Wertz, the club’s vice president, said they’re hoping to match last year’s impressive haul and enthusiastic community response. How often can one have fun while making a difference in their community? This weekend, Louisburg residents have ample opportunity for both.
