An 18-year-old South Dakota man was killed Sunday morning in a one-vehicle accident on Kansas Highway 68 near the Louisburg Cider Mill. According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Brandon J. Mechaley of Custer, S.D., was driving a 1997 Pontiac Firebird at a high rate of speed south on U.S. Highway 69 at 9:49 a.m. when a Kansas Highway patrolman attempted to stop the vehicle. Mechaley exited onto K-68 and began traveling westbound. Mechaley reportedly tried to avoid vehicles that were stopped to turn into the Louisburg Cider Mill, and he lost control of the vehicle, which rolled and came to rest on its top, according to the report. Mechaley was wearing a seat belt, and he was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Mechaley was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and no other drivers were injured in the accident. During the fall season, it is not uncommon for traffic to back up on K-68 as drivers wait to turn into the Louisburg Cider Mill.
