Growing up in a small town himself, local businessman Craig Holtzen cherishes the feeling of closeness that comes with being part of a close-knit community.

That feeling is one of the things he loves most about “Halloween on Broadway” in Louisburg.

“I grew up in a small town in a time when things felt different and you weren’t concerned about kids playing outside,” said Holtzen, owner of the local Edward Jones office. “Everybody cared about everybody, and it was a good place to be. I see this as being one of those times when you can interact with the community and do something fun.”

Continuing what has become a long-standing tradition, from 5 -8 p.m. Friday night the city will block off Broadway Street. Families will have the opportunity to bring their children down — decked out in their Halloween finest, of course — and allow them to trick-or-treat in a safe environment, among Broadway’s many storefronts.
Response in the past has been fantastic, from both the public and local businesses, said Damon Dennis, owner of Louisburg Chiropractic. Dennis and his staff have spear-headed the 2009 event, and are expecting upwards of 500 children and their families to attend.

He echoed Holtzen’s feelings about the sense of community “Halloween on Broadway” helped to foster.

“To me it keeps that small town atmosphere,” Dennis said. “We’re still not a large community, and we try to keep that atmosphere. It’s a good way to have the community come together for an evening of fun.”

This year’s event was moved to Friday, as opposed to Saturday, in order to make it easier for businesses to participate.
“It’s a fun way to get to see all of the kids in their costumes,” Holtzen said. “And this year it works out kind of nice, because it doesn’t compete with Halloween.”

“Halloween on Broadway” begins at 5:30 p.m. For more information, contact Louisburg Chiropractic at 837-2910.
