Like those involved in seemingly every other extracurricular program at Louisburg High School, FFA members have a proud tradition of success to hang their hats on.

That tradition includes multiple trips to compete at the national level, and on Oct. 21, eight members of Louisburg FFA traveled to Indianapolis for yet another such contest at the 82nd National FFA Organization convention.

This was the fifth time in the past seven years that the school sent a team to nationals in the food science and technology division, said LHS teacher Jim Morgan, who is FFA teacher and sponsor. The floriculture team, meanwhile, made its first appearance.

The trips to nationals represent a significant achievement, Morgan said.
“You’ve gotta win state to go, and it’s tough to do,” he said. “But I’ve been real fortunate to have great kids to do that, so it’s kind of neat.”
The degree of difficulty in each event is upped considerably at national competition. In floriculture, for example, students were asked to identify 40 different plants by scientific name, create a flower arrangement, and diagnose and recommend treatment for several different plant disorders, as well as to complete a variety of additional tasks.

The Louisburg FFA team acquitted itself well, however, and the experience was valuable for all involved.

“(FFA) really helped me to develop a lot,” said Ali McKiernan, a 2009 LHS graduate and nationals competitor. “And I definitely would not be where I am today without it, I guarantee it.”
