There have been years when Louisburg names on the All-Frontier League Volleyball Team were few and far between.
This year, however, there was no shortage of Wildcats. Louisburg had representatives on all three teams, which were named last week. The name that stood out was Emily Lemke, the Louisburg junior who led the Wildcats in two statistical categories and found a spot on the all-league first team. Fellow junior Colleen O’Brien was put on the second team, while seniors Jordan Shearer and Mandy Mulich earned honorable mentions. “I think that Louisburg was represented very well,” Louisburg coach Jessica Smith said. “This group of athletes have put in many hours and deserve the recognition given to them. However, none of them would have had a successful team if not for the other players on the team. This group worked really well together and pushed to make each other better.” Lemke, who played all over the court for the Wildcats, stood out in several areas, but maybe none more than in her outside hitter spot. She led the Wildcats with 239 kills as she helped them to a 26-14 record on the year. She also led the squad with 31 aces and had 143 digs to go along with 69 blocks on the season. “I was happy to see that Emily was selected on the first team,” Smith said. “She played really well all year round in the front row and back row, and to see that her efforts were recognized by others in the league is a nice compliment to her and her season.” O’Brien might have been the team’s most intimidating hitter. The junior played mostly the middle hitter role for Louisburg this year, and she made it tough for other teams to defend. She led the Wildcats with 146 blocks and also finished with 151 kills and 13 aces. She also led the team in kill efficiency. “I was happy to see that Colleen’s efforts were recognized as well,” Smith said. “Colleen really stepped it up this season and improved her front-row play considerably. She became a threat on the court. When the ball was set to her, it most likely was going to go down.” Shearer earned her second consecutive honorable mention selection as she led the Wildcat attack. She played all over the floor, but as the team’s setter, did her job well with 673 assists on the year and was second on the team with 30 aces. The Louisburg senior also finished 113 digs for her play in the back and had 64 blocks. Mulich, the Wildcats’ libero, proved to be more valuable as the year went on. She led Louisburg with 341 digs on season and served well with 19 aces. “Jordan and Mandy have both been solid players this season and last season,” Smith said. “To see them both recognized within the league is a testament to the work they have put in over the years. The Frontier League has a lot of talented volleyball athletes, and to see four players from Louisburg recognized is a good way to end the season.” LHS players selected for all-star game For the second year in a row, Louisburg will be represented in the Mo-Kan all-star volleyball game. Seniors Jordan Shearer, Mandy Mulich and Taylor Brown were all selected to play in the 13th-annual All-Star Volleyball Match at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo. Last year, former Wildcat Chelsea Morland played in the all-star affair. Joining them will be other area players from Paola and Spring Hill.
