Dave Mader is a big fan of May 26, 1954.

To most, that might seem something of an obscure date, but not to those who have spent time in the United States Armed Forces. To veterans, it is a very important date indeed.

It’s the day President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a law declaring that, henceforth, “Armistice Day” would be known as “Veterans Day.”
“It was the best thing that could have happened,” Mader said. “To honor the people who served and are serving.”

Mader is the current Area East Vice Commander for the American Legion, and adjutant with American Legion Post 250 in Louisburg. Along with members of Post 250 Louisburg and VFW Post 7348, as well as veterans and community members from all over Miami County, Mader will be in Paola today, honoring those who have served and are still serving in the armed forces.

It’s an event that carries special meaning, said John Hahn, junior vice commander of VFW Post 7348, as it serves to remind them of the unique brotherhood of which they are a part.
“Over the years, we still send Christmas cards to a couple dozen friends from the past, all over the states,” he said, speaking of friends made during his 21 years of service. “It’s when we write notes and catch up, and the list keeps getting smaller.”

Memorial services for Veterans Day will be conducted the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month at the Miami County Veterans Memorial at Baptiste and Hospital drives in Paola. This is the hour, day and month designating the end of World War I, the honoring of which was first known as Armistice Day and, of course, eventually became Veteran’s Day.

Carl Gregg, president of the Miami County Veterans Memorial Committee, is in charge of the event.

The Paola High School band will perform under the direction of Nick Proctor. The posting of colors will be by VFW and American Legion members assisted by the auxiliaries of the two service organizations.

Capt. William Shuber, commander of Paola National Guard Unit, will be the key speaker.

Gregg said Rev. Roy Rose will offer the invocation and the benediction in place of Bob Harrington, who passed away Nov. 1, and Proctor will close with taps.

In addition Gene Farmer, commander of Miami Post 156 American Legion and Carl Gregg, commander of Sheldon-Banton VFW Post 3712, will commemorate the passing of Legion and VFW members.

Delores Herrs, representing the American Legion Auxiliary, and Judy Martin, representing the VFW, will jointly lay the commemorative wreath.

The Veterans Honor Guard will fire  the “21-gun” salute.

A Veterans Day celebration is also scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today, at Louisburg Middle School. The assembly will be held in the middle school’s auditorium, and the community is invited to attend.
