The Louisburg Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team seems poised for a successful season, and if one needs proof, all they need to do is look at the Wildcats’ first seven games. Louisburg opened the season on a tear with victories over Pioneer Ridge and Wheatridge, then followed it up with a win over Shawnee Heights and Wheatridge in the Wheatridge Basketball Tournament to put the Wildcats in the title game against Topeka Seaman. Although the Wildcats fell 45-31 in the championship game, they continued their winning ways. On Nov. 9, the Wildcats traveled to Spring Hill and came out with a 30-22 win. Louisburg followed it up with a 51-45 win over Baldwin on Thursday in its home opener to give them a 6-1 record to start the year. Against Baldwin, Nicole Hopkins led the Wildcats with 13 points, while teammate Maddie DeShazer and Kacie Geiman each finished with 12 points. Savannah Mitchell added six points in the win, while Brecken Sigg finished with three. Ellie Walter and LeeAnna Schmidt each contributed a basket and Shelby Whiting scored one point. “The ‘A’ team has been doing very well against their opponents,” eighth-grade coach Bernadette Stevens said. “It’s good to see that everyone is providing their own little bit of help to accomplish the larger goal to work as a collective whole. “We have been scoring more than what I was anticipating with a middle school team. The girls work well together, and they are able to do both organized plays and quick changes to take advantage of opportunities that arise. They can see the floor well. We are having fun and making improvements in the process.” In the victory over Spring Hill, Hopkins and DeShazer each led the Wildcats with eight points in the win, while Crista Houchen finished with five. Geiman added four points. Whiting and Mitchell scored three and two points, respectively. The junior varsity is also off on the right foot with a 3-1 start to its season. After a loss to Pioneer Ridge to start the season, the Wildcats defeated Wheatridge, and then on Nov. 9, they recorded a 25-20 road win over Spring Hill. Louisburg followed that up with a 26-11 home win Thursday over Baldwin. Against Baldwin, Kelsie Eslick led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Maddi Majeski finished with four. Kalli Morland added three points, while Emma Vogel scored two. Kaelee Allen and Morgan Hyden each added a point. Eslick again led the Wildcats, this time against Spring Hill. Eslick scored a game-high 13 points, while Hyden and Morland each finished with four. Haley Burton and Allen each added two points in the win.
