KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jordan Shearer figured her high school volleyball career was over following Louisburg’s loss in the substate semifinals in October. A couple weeks later, she received some good news. Shearer was selected to compete in the 13th Annual Mo-Kan Volleyball Senior All-Star match Sunday at Avila University, and she jumped at the chance. Although Kansas fell to Missouri in three games, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-12, it was still a great opportunity for the Louisburg senior. However, the setter position was a little crowded. Shearer, who led the Louisburg attack to 26 wins on the season, found herself alongside there other setters — Paola’s Allison Wood, Spring Hill’s Kelsey Carbajo and St. James Academy’s Lauren Brown. “It was really fun,” Shearer said. “There was four setters on the team, so one of us wasn’t going to get the playing time there, and I volunteered. I did it because I really like do some of the other stuff too. I actually got to hit a little bit and that was fun, even though it was toward the end.” Shearer entered the game and served on several occasions, even serving three straight points in Kansas’ only victory. Shearer recorded several digs and even got to play on the front row for a few plays. Despite playing a new position, the Louisburg senior didn’t look lost on the court and played well in the minutes she was given. “Jordan did a really good job playing in the all-star match,” said Louisburg coach Jessica Smith, who was on hand to watch the game. “Because of the make-up of the team, she ended up playing in a position that she was unfamiliar with, but she still held her own. I was proud of the way she handled playing as a defensive specialist. It goes to show that Jordan understands and knows the sport well enough to step into any position and contribute to the team.” Shearer also shared the floor with several opponents from last season. She joined Paola’s Bri Mueller and Kayla Offutt, Spring Hill’s McKenzie Schick, along with Wood and Carbajo on the Kansas team. Louisburg teammates Mandy Mulich and Taylor Brown were supposed to attend, but could not because of previous engagements. In other words, the Frontier League was well represented Sunday. “I thought it was cool that I got a chance to play with some of the best players in our league instead of playing each other all the time,” Shearer said. “It was better to have them on our team than against us.”
