One could hardly walk through the doors of the American Legion Saturday night there were so many people.

Everyone was smiling, shaking hands, hugging and eating plates full of pulled pork and brisket.

And it was all for one 10-year-old boy and his family.

Drake Renner, son of Jodi and Dennis Renner, had heart surgery in late September for a coarctation of the aorta, or a narrowing of the aorta in his heart.
Members of the community and local businesses immediately reacted to help.

Lissa Cranston-Shearer, Jodi’s long-time friend, helped organize the event, which included a silent auction with around 42 items donated from community members, a live auction and plates of brisket and pulled pork prepared by Mike Mulich. Around $900 was raised from food alone and the leftover pulled pork was auctioned off for $75.
Local businesses donated everything from bread to napkins and cups for the event.
“This is unbelievable,” Dennis Renner said Saturday night while observing the crowd. “When we drove in around 7, the parking lot was full, and I just broke down and cried.”
Despite the tears, Dennis had a smile on his face.

Leslye Givarz, Jodi’s mother, said the turnout was overwhelming.

“It’s a testimony to teamwork and community in a time of great stress,” she said standing beside her daughter.
Jodi was at a loss for words as Drake smiled and laughed with his friends in the front row at the auction.

“I have the upmost appreciation for everyone,” she said. “Thank you to everyone, to Lissa and just everyone.”

More than $10,000 was raised, and will go to help the Renner’s with Drake’s medical bills.
