After sleeping off the Thanksgiving turkey and enjoying a little time off, I decided to glance at the winter sports schedule, and I about fell out of my chair. It is already here. It is time for the winter season to begin, and it starts Friday when both basketball teams travel to Prairie View for their season opener, while the wrestling team will hit the road Saturday at the Fort Scott Invitational. No matter the team I have covered in the past, I have always had a good idea on how the season would finish out for each team, and there was a set of expectations. This season, however, I can’t even figure out how the boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons will shake out. The boys have a new coach in Chad Harvey, and with every new coach comes great optimism. Before the season even started, the Wildcats were hit with injuries, and Harvey won’t have his full roster to start the season. Despite that, Harvey has some nice pieces to work with and has six seniors for leadership. But the roster is still full of underclassmen, and they might experience some bumps in the road early. But after watching a couple practices, the Wildcats have taken to their new coach, and there is a lot of excitement surrounding the program. As the for the girls squad, the Wildcats go from one of the biggest teams in the Frontier League to one of the smallest. Although, it isn’t necessarily all bad. Louisburg is all of a sudden one of the quickest teams in the league and it will pressure teams for 32 minutes. They have a deep bench and coach Terry Tinich has no problem running players in and out of the game. He has good senior leadership, and he calls it some of the best he has ever had. Leadership is a big part of any team’s success and the Wildcats look to have plenty of it. Wrestling, on the other hand, is a different story. The Wildcats return two state medalists and have three wrestlers in Bryce, Austin and Cullen Hood who each have a shot to win a state title. The wrestling season should be an exciting one to watch and it could be a special year. It could be a special year for all three teams and it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. I can’t wait.
