There is no way around it: The Louisburg junior varsity girls’ basketball team has had a strong start to its season. Although the Wildcats have only played two games, they have won by an average of 45 points, including a 57-6 victory over Atchison on Dec. 15. Louisburg opened its season with a 51-12 win over Prairie View on Dec. 4. Against Atchison, Louisburg used a big first half to set up the 51-point victory. The Wildcats outscored the Lady Red 18-0 in the opening quarter and 17-3 in the second. “It was a nice way to go into the holiday break,” Louisburg coach Jarrod Worthington said. “The girls were told that they work too hard and play too few games for us to ever take an opponent lightly, and the girls were definitely ready. I saw very few lapses in focus out there, and the girls deserve credit for that.” Brooke Vaughan had a big game for Louisburg with 13 points, and teammate Lark Hutchison joined her in double figures with 10. Brook Frazier added eight points, while Donna Edwards and Madison Wertz each finished with six. Carlie Houchen and Cheyenne Henderson scored four points in the win; Colleen O’Brien, MaKenzie Ruder and Maggie Mackey added two points apiece. “The girls shared the basketball extremely well, even though it could have been easy to try to showboat with a score like this,” Worthington said. “Needless to say, I’m happy to see the unselfishness in this group.” In its season opener against Prairie View, Louisburg once again used a strong start, but it was the third quarter that sealed the deal for the Wildcats. Louisburg jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter, but outscored Prairie View 19-0 in the third to pull away. Wertz and Frazier led Louisburg with 10 points apiece, while Vaughan chipped in seven. O’Brien, Hutchison and Henderson scored six points apiece. Edwards, Denise Southard and Ruder each finished with two points to round out the Wildcat scoring. “I liked the fact that Prairie View hung around in the first half and wouldn’t really let us go on any big runs,” Worthington said. “That forced us to stay focused and believe in the process of what we’re doing. Our style of play might not always lead to big first half leads, but if we stick with it, the second half is where we should see some results.” The Wildcats return to the court after the holiday break Jan. 8, when they travel to Gardner-Edgerton.
