It all happened so quickly for Deborah Blancarte. As first reported in the Louisburg Herald on Jan. 28, the former principal of Broadmoor Elementary School faced a pair of felony drug charges in Miami County District Court early this year. Charged with possessing the painkiller hydrocodone and attempting to possess the drug between Aug. 1 and Oct. 1, 2008, according to court documents, Blancarte also allegedly attempted to unlawfully refill a hydrocodone prescription, but failed. Within a week, she had submitted her resignation to Superintendent Rick Doll and Louisburg USD 416 — a departure formally accepted by the Board of Education on Feb. 9. “She intends to resign her position, effective immediately,” Doll told the Louisburg Herald on Feb. 2. “She will not be returning to the school.” Unfortunately, for Blancarte, her troubles were just beginning. A preliminary hearing at the Miami County Courthouse was scheduled for Feb. 3. Several school officials, including former school resource officer Chuck Bond and Broadmoor Elementary School secretary Anita Cook were scheduled to appear. That hearing never came to pass. The charges facing Blancarte were amended to a single count of conspiracy to possess hydrocodone, and the hearing was continued to Feb. 12. However, a diversion agreement was reached prior to that date. If Blancarte can successfully complete an 18-month program, all charges will be dropped. Chris McLean was hired by the Board of Education as Blancarte’s successor at Broadmoor on May 11. “I’ve always been impressed with the Louisburg community and the dedication to its schools,” McLean said in the May 13 Herald. “The opportunity to return to an elementary position was one that really intrigued me.”
