1925-2010

Fern L. Fort, 84, Paola, died Jan. 16, 2010, at the Life Care Center of Osawatomie in the presence of her six children.

She was born April 1, 1925, in Paola to John William and Laura Elizabeth Hennes Homrighausen. She grew up in rural Paola where she attended Davenport School and graduated from Paola High School in 1942.

After high school, she worked for the ASC office in Paola and Panhandle Eastern in Kansas City. Years later, she became a real estate agent for Carter Realty in Paola and later purchased Poncho’s restaurant in Paola which she owned and operated for 16 years before retiring.

On March 3, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harvey L. Fort. They became the parents of six children. They made their home on a farm in rural Paola. She was a devoted wife, mother and daughter. Her most cherished moments were sharing time with her family. She enjoyed growing flowers, playing cards, games, crocheting afghans, playing the piano, listening to country music, watching basketball, sewing, but most of all her family. She has left many memories for her family to cherish, including baking a birthday cake for every family member on his or her birthday, hiding Easter baskets for all of her grandchildren on Easter; and she was especially fond of Christmas and bringing her entire family together for big meals and everyone spending family time together.

She is preceded in death by her husband, an infant son and a granddaughter.

Surviving are her children, Barb Brandt, Carol Fields, Roger Fort and Mary Tarhini, all of Paola, Nancy Beckman of Olathe, and Dennis Fort of Osage City; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Services were Tuesday, followed by burial in Paola Cemetery. Arrangements were by Penwell-Gabel Paola Chapel, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071, (913) 294-2372. Pallbearers were her grandchildren: Greg Brandt, James Fanning, Arthur Fort, Mike Lierz, Zach Tarhini, Trey Fort, Duncan Fort, Gunnar Fort and Rodney Fields. Honorary pallbearers were Jennifer Lierz, Shannon Fanning, Paige Fort, Aundrea Tarhini, Briona Fields, Dylan Fanning and Kolby Fanning.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Foster Grandparents Program.
