When discussing the unique nature of the American Legion Post 250 Wild Game Feed fund-raiser, Rita Knop raises a salient point.

“Where would you go to eat bear?” she asked. “Where would you go to eat elk? It’s not anything you’re going to get in a restaurant around here, that’s for sure.”

The event was founded last year, as a way to help fund Louisburg’s American Legion summer baseball team. Dan Henderson had volunteered to take over the team, Knop explained, and upon doing so discovered almost no budget for uniforms, tournament entry fees and other essentials. Upon hearing of the team’s plight, Post 250 wanted to find a way to help. So Henderson and Knop, a member and former president of the Post 250 Auxiliary, put their heads together.

Thus, the idea of a wild game supper was born.

“He said ‘How would we do that?’” Knop recalled. “I said ‘Let me have it, and I’ll show you.’”

Plans came together quickly after that. All of the meat was donated, Knop explained, and the variety included bear, elk, racoon, pheasant, dove, corned venison, deer, fish of all kinds and more. So many items flooded in for their accompanying silent auction that Knop was able to create a ‘buy it now’ table filled with T-shirts, sweatshirts and the like.

In the end, she said, the night was a huge success. A crowd of more than 150 people showed up at Post 250 — 403 S. Ninth St. — to sample the exotic fare, helping the post raise almost $6,000 for the team. The money not only provided them with all necessary funds, but left them a bit of wiggle room for expenses with their season.

This year, Knop said, they’re hoping the turnout will be even bigger. American Legion Post 250 will host its second annual Wild Game Feed and Silent Auction fund-raiser Saturday at the Legion Post, and the menu will include an even bigger variety than before.

They couldn’t manage to get elk meat this time around, she said, but attendees will be able to enjoy the bulk of last year’s offerings plus frog legs, emu, wild turkey, goose, rabbit and even squirrel.

With a little more time to plan for the 2010 event,  organizers have tracked down another sizable haul of silent auction items, donated from local and regional businesses.

The Legion baseball team is a worthy cause for a number of reasons, Knop said.

“This can give them a chance at a career as well as summer fun,” she explained. “It can be as much as they want to make it. And we feel like they deserve that opportunity.”

The event will once again be held at the post, beginning with silent auction viewing and bidding at 6 p.m. The smorgasbord-style wild game dinner begins at 7 p.m. A $10 per-person donation is required at the door, and the meal includes a variety of wild game, side items, drinks and dessert. Brownies will be donated by Chris Cakes.
