Things haven’t been going as expected for the Louisburg eighth-grade boys’ basketball team this season, especially after its 52-20 loss to Baldwin on Jan. 25. However, that loss was quickly forgotten Thursday when the Wildcats traveled to Eudora. Something just seemed to click. Louisburg rolled Eudora 51-23 for its best performance on the season thanks to big games from Wyatt Sander and Will Garza. Sander led Louisburg with 16 points and Garza added 15. “We played our most complete game of the season,” Louisburg coach John Ozier said. “Slowing the game down really cut back our turnovers and forced us to look for good shots.” The Wildcats took a 33-11 lead at halftime, and they ended the first half on a good note when Drew Carder sank a 3-pointer from just across half-court on an assist from D.J. Meyer. Jack Niebaum finished the game with six points and Carder added three. Taylor Donaldson, Ben Powers, Tyler Reno and Jack Niebrugge scored two points and T.J. McKiearnan added one. Against Baldwin, those same shots weren’t falling for Louisburg. The Wildcats managed just 10 points in the first half. Reno led Louisburg with six points and Sander scored five points. Garza added three, while Donaldson, Luke Hupp and Carder finished with two points each. “Cold shooting and our inability to handle Baldwin’s transition put us down early and we could not recover,” Ozier said. “We continue to struggle with turning the ball over and getting empty possessions.” The junior varsity team, on the other hand, picked up two exciting wins. Against Baldwin on Jan. 25, Louisburg won 32-31 in overtime as Triston Boeve hit two critical free throws in the extra period to help seal the win. Jacob Arbuckle led Louisburg with 13 points and Auston McLellan scored 12 points. Boeve finished with four points, McKiearnan added two and Justin Bussell scored one. In Thursday’s game against Eudora, McKiearnan gave Louisburg a big lift with a tip-in at the buzzer to help the Wildcats to a 28-27 victory. Bussell led Louisburg with seven points, while McKiearnan and Niebrugge finished with six. Boeve added four points in the victory. Simeon Bowman and Arbuckle scored three and two points, respectively.
