The Louisburg freshman girls’ basketball team is off to quite a start to its season and it continued its winning ways Friday in Ottawa.

After falling behind in the second quarter, the Wildcats took control and won 46-38 over the Cyclones to run their record to 6-2 on the season.

“The girls responded well to a very physical, intense style of play against a very good Ottawa team,” Louisburg coach Shawn Lowry said. “It was apparent that this was a game the Ottawa coaches were excited about wanting to win with their young group of players.”

Again, Louisburg got strong play from its post players, more specifically Anna Bell and Katheryn Dixon. Bell led Louisburg with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Dixon tallied a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 20 rebounds.

Bailey Aiken got in the act as well with 11 points and seven rebounds. Point guard Brook Vaughan was strong on the defensive end with 10 steals.

Katie Dixon pulled down seven rebounds and two points, while Clara Littrell and Karlie Stuteville each recorded six rebounds.

“Due to the girls’ hard work and development at this point in the season, we have been able to add more defensive options,” Lowry said. “Each time I have asked more of this group, the more they come together.

“This group of players is really starting to show signs of the team they have the potential to be.”

Louisburg took a 18-15 lead at halftime, and after an even third quarter, the Wildcats came alive with 17 points in the fourth to seal the win.
