OTTAWA — It was all going according to plan. The Louisburg girls basketball team tried something a little different during Friday’s Frontier League game in Ottawa. Against one of the better teams in the league, the Wildcats decided to take a different approach. The plan worked — in the first half, anyway. The plan was foiled in the second half. Louisburg had Ottawa on the ropes in the first half, but the Cyclones grew stronger as the game went on and ended any hope of an upset with a 52-39 victory. “For three quarters I really thought what we were doing was working,” Louisburg coach Terry Tinich said. “We asked the girls to do something a little different and they all bought in. Everyone was about the team, but in the second half our shots just weren’t falling.” The plan was to shuffle five players for five every two minutes. One group was to play man defense and the other played zone. It certainly had Ottawa’s main players, Jordan Baldwin and Kearsten Peoples a little confused, and the Wildcats jumped out to a 19-9 lead early in the second quarter. After that, however, the Cyclones went on a little run of their own. Ottawa outscored Louisburg 41-10 to build a 50-29 lead midway through the fourth quarter and it left the Wildcats deflated. “This one hurts a little bit, but we did all we could and we played hard,” Tinich said. “They threw a 2-3 zone on us in the second half and we just couldn’t hit shots. We just have to forget about this one and move on.” Midway through the first quarter, the Louisburg offense got rolling as it got baskets from Gentry Griffin, Carlie Houchen and Jordan Shearer to build a 12-6 lead into the second quarter. Marisa Mackey continued the run in the second with a 3-pointer, and baskets from Shearer and Lark Hutchison gave Louisburg a 10-point lead. The Wildcat defense also forced 13 first half turnovers to help keep a 22-19 halftime lead. “We got contributions from everyone,” Tinich said. “This will certainly give some of those younger players confidence for the rest of the year with how many minutes they played.” Emily Lemke led Louisburg in scoring with eight points, while Mackey and Shearer added six points in the loss. Baldwin, however, scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the second half and the Cyclones had their way down low as Peoples finished with 14 points. The Wildcats returned to action Tuesday with a home game against Maize South and will host Eudora on Friday for homecoming. LOU 12 10 5 12 — 39 OTT 6 13 18 15 — 52 LOUISBURG: Emily Lemke 8, Marisa Mackey 6, Jordan Shearer 6, Gentry Griffin 4, Mandy Mulich 4, Madison Wertz 4, Jordan Crow 3, Carlie Houchen 2, Lark Hutchison 2.
