Dear Editor,
A few months ago, I read in the newspaper that Louisburg would soon allow Sunday liquor sales. I felt this new law would take away from our small-town charm. I called the county clerk’s office and received the necessary information needed to file a petition to send the issue to vote. I was also advised to seek private legal counsel. With a little over a month before the deadline, I researched petitions on the Internet, composed mine, had it reviewed by a former mayor, then dropped it off at the county clerk’s office.

Three days later. I received a letter stating my petition didn’t contain the exact legal wording for the issue. The letter stated in quotes what was to be written and suggested private legal counsel. I corrected the petition and resubmitted it. Again, three days later, I received a letter.

With about two weeks left, I contacted an attorney. She stated $150 and hour, guessing three hours of work. It wasn’t going to happen. I was running out of time. I had to ask for help, hire an attorney to write the petition, submit it, wait for approval, collect signatures and allow time for signature verification. I was a day late and a dollar short.

After speaking with Mayor Curt Shreckengaust, he stated he decided to pass the issue to support the businesses of Louisburg. I just wanted us, the people, to have the opportunity to vote either way. I learned by attending City Council meetings that I could have voiced my opinion or contacted council members. Without our input, the council does what they believe is best. I plan to focus less on my rights and more on my responsibilities, because one does not happen without the other. I will try to attend as many meetings as possible, and I urge others to do the same. Mayor Shreckengaust stated that he desires to have a Web site posting the agendas of the meetings so we may be prepared and informed. I am eagerly waiting.

Tracy McCombs,
Louisburg
