With the expiration of the 61-day petition period last week, Sunday liquor sales have at last officially come to Louisburg. It’s a change that may seem small in the grand scheme of things; after all, Sunday is just one day of the week. But the economic recession magnifies the impact of every dollar coming and going into the city. Allowing Sunday sales means more revenue in coffers — not only of local businesses, but also of the city. It was a decision the Louisburg City Council did not make lightly, and in the end their logic was sound. In October, City Administrator Jeff Cantrell said the lack of Sunday sales put Louisburg merchants at a distinct disadvantage, as dollars were being spent in neighboring communities, such as Paola. Many of those same merchants publicly agreed with that assessment. During the Nov. 16 meeting at which the ordinance was officially passed, Art Kesterson spoke of the possibility of Sunday sales driving up other business in the area — such as Louisburg’s restaurants and gas stations as customers pass through town on the way to the lake or other recreational destinations. Not everyone is happy about the change, to be sure, and at least one area merchant is included on that list. But this is a change that will benefit Louisburg in the long run, particularly in this tough economy. Never in recent history has the old adage been more true: Every dollar really does count.
