The 2009 American Legion Post 250 Wild Game Feed fund-raiser was, to put it mildly, a smashing success. The brainchild of Post 250 Auxiliary member Rita Knop and Legion baseball coach Dan Henderson, the first iteration of the event surpassed all of their expectations en route to raising almost $6,000. So successful was the wild game supper, Knop said, the team had money for equipment, tournament entry fees and a little left over. Almost as soon as the last dish was cleared, they knew they had to bring it back for round two. But much has changed economically in the past year, and Knop was unsure of what to expect for 2010. Times are tough for a lot of folks, which means less money to donate to charitable causes – no matter how worthy. Of course, as they always do, the Louisburg community responded. Cars overflowed the parking lot at the Legion post Saturday night for the event, spilling over on to nearby streets and keeping the house packed for hours on end. The result? More than $7,500 raised to support the Post 250 baseball team. “It was just overwhelming, the turnout, the auction,” Knop said. “Just the whole evening went off without a hitch.” This year featured a significantly expanded menu, as almost 200 diners sampled everything from emu and bison to rabbit and even frog legs. The exotic fare proved a hit with everyone, Knop said, and nobody went home hungry. Approximately 70 area individuals and businesses donated to the silent auction that accompanied the event, more than double the previous year’s total. Beyond the importance of funding the post’s baseball team – a cause about which she is understandably passionate – for Knop, the most meaningful element of the event’s success is the unity it brought to the Legion post and its various branches. Typically, she said, each branch has its own fund raisers; be it the American Legion, the Auxiliary, American Legion Riders or the Sons of the American Legion. This time, everyone came together to support a worthy cause. “For this one, it’s one entity,” Knop said. “We are the baseball team and we joined hands and pushed it. I think that’s one reason it’s been such a huge success.”
