At high schools throughout the United States, the word “homecoming” is typically one associated with a great deal of fanfare and anticipation. Louisburg High School is no different. This fall, students dressed up and decorated their hallways during football homecoming. They attended the bonfire and parade, and some even stuffed their faces in the school’s first ever homecoming hot dog-eating contest. Tradtionlly, Winter Homecoming is perhaps a little more laid back. Which isn’t to say the event isn’t an equally important part of the high school experience, said LHS Principal Dave Tappan. “I think it’s a time for the kids to be kids, and enjoy some of the rituals and things that take place during homecoming,” he said. The list of Homecoming Week activities isn’t quite as robust as its fall counterpart, but it’s a week packed with fun nonetheless. Each day is themed, and students are asked to dress accordingly. Monday, for example, was Snuggie Day, while today has been dubbed Disney Day. The task of organizing the week’s activities falls to the LHS Student Council and its two faculty sponsors — Jenna Jones and Jason Nelson. The council has shouldered the responsibility extremely well for the most part, Jones said, with some choosing to take a more involved role than others. “There’s always a small group that kind of emerges and really takes the leadership of planning the dance,” she explained. “I think that they’ve enjoyed it just as well as Fall Homecoming.” The activities culminate Friday with a trophy case decorating contest, traditional dodgeball game — which the student council has tried to spice up this year with a dance competition — and, of course, Friday night’s homecoming basketball game. Saturday, members of the student council will arise bright and early to begin the process of decorating for the formal dance that night; transforming the school in accordance with the event’s theme ‘A Night in Vegas.’ If student feedback is any indication, the school dances are always a big hit, Jones said; a trend she hopes Winter Homecoming will continue in 2010. “In fact, this year I’ve been asked by students not on student council if we can have more,” she said. “I think it just gives them memories to look back on, I think they like to get dressed up and take pictures, that sort of thing.”
