Lazy Saturday interrupted by productivity PDF Print E-mail

“Aaah, finally Saturday,” I said, verbalizing a sigh as I kicked back on the couch and turned on my Xbox 360. “Time for a little R and R.”

It had been a while since I had a day with nothing to do; granted I still went down to the farmers’ market for an interview for the weekly vendor feature. It has been a string of active weeks and Louisburg wasn’t taking a break.

Upon my return home, though, I faced a day of no obligations and no responsibilities.

That is, until my wife Leann learned of my spare time.

That day, I mowed the lawn and trimmed around the house, drove to the scary part of Kansas City for a good deal on a used tail light, replaced said tail light, cleaned the bathroom vent, fixed the toilet paper holder and put together a table.

There’s more, but, you get the picture.

I love her with all my heart and she’s the best thing ever to happen to me, but there’s something to be said for procrastination every now and then.

“I just like to get things done,” she tells me.

“I know,” as I reluctantly began on the next project.

To be fair, she completed a number of projects as well, from cleaning the kitchen to weeding the flower beds. She definitely pulls her weight.

It’s probably a good thing she expects me to be as productive as she is. I spent two years living with three other guys in college right before we married, which made for quite the change in lifestyle. No longer would I wash a dish for the sake of using it and placing it back in the stack of dirty dishes.

I remember one morning waking up to a clogged bathroom sink. The roommate down my wing didn’t feel like fixing it and neither did I. For the next six months, we used the bathtub faucet as a sink.

That same year, somebody who will not be named put his foot through a wall. Don’t ask how, but I’ll give you a hint as to who did it. He probably works for a newspaper now. The hole remained until check-out time came around, which was the catalyst for change in that particular situation.

It was repaired well, as was the sink, and the landlord was satisfied.

I guess when you grow up with situations like that, where there’s no punishment for letting things go and they’re easily reversed later on, that it’s easy to stay in the habit of the lazy person’s cycle. This building up of projects leads to an accumulation of stress as the workload towers overhead.

With this in mind, I look at the relatively short list of maintenance items and come to the conclusion it’s probably better to get as much done now as possible to keep the pile of work at eye-level. There was a compromise that day as I took time for a nap and a movie instead of using the time to change the oil.

So, as I’m handed the honey-do list, I turn off my Xbox and accept that the love of my life is right, again, and get to work.
