Broadmoor Middle School students may be incorporating some reporting lessons with some new technology in the near future.
Principal Chris McLean started a blog called “The Broadmoor Beat” this past weekend, using a blogspot.com template.
McLean said he has been thinking of doing a blog for quite a while, but he only recently got some time to set it up.
The blog focuses on what students at Broadmoor Middle School are doing, including projects, daily activities and special events. McLean added he hopes to start having the students use reporting skills to help him update the site with what’s going on at the school.

Sticking to their original plan, Louisburg USD 416 Board of Education members approved their district’s 2010 budget with a 3.566-mill levy increase.
The increase raises the USD 416 levy from 61.584 mills to 65.150 mills.
For a property owner with a $100,000 home, the school increase would amount to about $41 each year. Although the mill rate determines the amount of property taxes paid by homeowners, the actual tax is determined by the home’s assessed valuation.
The increase is heavily due to the fact that the district’s bond and interest payments increased this year and assessed valuation decreased, Superintendent Sharon Zoellner said.

Judging by the numbers, it would look like Louisburg USD 416’s districtwide enrollment is significantly down compared with the 2008-09 school year, but that isn’t the case, Superintendent Sharon Zoellner said.
Preliminary numbers indicate that 1,580 students have enrolled at one of Louisburg’s four schools for the 2009-10 school year, nearly 200 fewer than the year before. But, Zoellner said, the new implementation of online enrollment this year may have confused some parents, and the schools are still working to enroll students they know are returning.
“It’s a combination of online enrollment and (parents) thinking they don’t have to call in or send in the information,” Zoellner said. “And we also want to make sure parents understand they need to go in and enroll, even if they can’t pay right now.”

Parents wishing to speed up the Louisburg USD 416 enrollment process have a more convenient option this year.
The district rolled out its online enrollment option this year, allowing parents to download necessary enrollment forms for each school and pay fees online. Forms still must be returned to the child’s school in hard copy either by mail or during one of the school’s walk-in enrollment dates.
“What they can’t do is enroll and it is all submitted online,” said Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services Pam Best.
All forms are available online, as well as directions for enrollment, on the district’s Web site, www.usd416.org.

Louisburg homeowners could be on the hook for more than three more mills on their tax bills if the Louisburg USD 416 Board of Education approves its proposed budget next month.
Superintendent Sharon Zoellner, leading her first board meeting in her position, presented the board with the 2009-10 proposed budget Monday night, and that budget shows a 3.56-mill increase from 61.584 mills in 2008 to 65.15 mills this year.
In addition to funding cuts from the state, declining assessed valuation in the district has also made a dent in the budget.
“Assessed valuation is down about $2 million, and that’s creating an issue for us on the mill levy,” Zoellner said.
The decline in assessed valuation accounts for about 2 mills of the increase, Zoellner said, and an additional $1 million in bond and interest payments accounts for one mill of the increase.
