Louisburg drivers are about to see some additional “red” along their roadways in the coming weeks, after members of the Louisburg City Council voted unanimously to install four new stop signs Monday night.

With its passage, city ordinance no. 972 will install signs at south 1st Street eastbound at Peoria Street; Peoria Street southbound at south 2nd Street; and both southbound and northbound along Sycamore Drive at north 14th Street.

It was a full agenda for Monday’s regular meeting, as the council addressed on a number of items. Among them was the opening of discussion on the topic of an engine braking ordinance within the city, at the request of City Administrator Jeff Cantrell.

The issue has arisen due to a number of complaints from residents living primarily between Rockville and Metcalf roads. As semi trucks traveling westbound along Kansas Highway 68 are forced to slow upon entering the city, the noise produced by “jake brakes” can reach a disturbing level, Cantrell explained.

Doug Key loves his job as activities director at Louisburg High School.

He loves the teachers and coaches he works with, he loves getting ready for game day, and most of all, he loves the students. So when he turned in his resignation, it was even tougher than he imagined.

Key recently resigned his position, and it became official when it was approved at the March 8 USD 416 school board meeting. He had no other choice.
Thanks to looming job cuts within the district, Key started looking at his options and was recently hired as the public information and activities director for the USD 203 Piper school district.

It was a job offer he couldn’t pass up.

“I understood that this position was going to be on the cutting block for the second year in a row,” Key said. “When the Piper position came open due to retirement, I drove my application and resume up to the superintendent. I told them up front the reason I am coming here is because my job will be rifted.

“I went through the interview process and told them that the job I wanted to keep was the one (in Louisburg). I just didn’t know for my family’s sake. Do I want to stay in a position where two years in a row it has been on the projected list of cutting? Do I want to go through that every spring time? I had to look and I think it is a smart move for me.”

The look on Chloe Philgreen’s face could only be described as one of intense concentration.

As four of her friends whirled jump ropes in a criss-cross pattern, the Broadmoor Elementary School fourth-grader counted the rotations as she waited for the right moment to make her move. And when the ropes reached their apex, she dashed in, timing it just right and jumping in rhythm with the turns.

So surprised was she that, when the ropes inevitably entangled her, all Chloe could do was laugh excitedly with her friends, moving to take a stab at turning the ropes as another jumper prepared to enter the fray.

Under normal circumstances, the life of a bachelor or bachelorette isn’t without its stresses.

But being auctioned off to the highest bidder for an evening of dancing? Well, that takes things to a whole different level.

As the event organizer of the American Legion Riders Annual Bachelor and Bachelorette Auction and Dance, Johnna Ross sees the anxiety written on the faces of her volunteers every year. They worry about whether or not anyone will bid on them, she said, and how much money they’ll bring in.

As superintendent of schools for Louisburg USD 416, Sharon Zoellner has a job that includes a great many responsibilities.

Right now, however, circumstances have pushed one of those duties to the forefront.

“It is very, very critical for me, as superintendent, to have the community informed,” she said. “One of my goals is to get as much information out as we can.”
