Dear Editor:

I am not a person who usually draws attention to myself or writes to the paper, but there is something I just don’t understand. It’s the city of Louisburg’s utilities. I called the city about my utility bill (gas, water, sewer, etc.) — which, by the way, wasn’t an overly large bill — to ask if I could pay half of my balance by the end of the month and then get caught up the next month. I was informed that I could go to any of the churches in town, and they could pay up to $150 of my utility bill.

Dear Editor:

After reading the letters and the article in last week’s Louisburg Herald about youth sports, and after talking with several parents about the letters and article this past Saturday, I felt as the vice president of basketball for the Louisburg Area Recreation Association (LARA), I was obligated to write a letter.

I think the article and the letters gave a lot of people the impression that every LARA basketball game is out of control, but that is not true, and I don’t believe that was the intent of the authors. On Feb. 6, we had a couple of incidents at two of our 18 games on that day, and those issues have been addressed. However, we have a lot of coaches, volunteers and fans who were not involved in the incidents who were made to look bad.

Dear Editor,

This past weekend, I attended my daughter’s Louisburg Area Recreation Association (LARA) basketball games. This is her first year playing, and I enjoy watching her play. What I do not enjoy is the adults. Let me say that again: the adults who are yelling at the referees every time a girl (always on the opposing team, of course) takes an extra couple of steps or forgets to tuck her elbows in when she is on defense. Come on people, they are kids! Let them play. The coaches are there to teach the kids the fundamentals of the game. These kids are far from WNBA players. Heck, they aren’t even middle-school players yet.

While I could name names, I won’t, because I know that they aren’t the only people who act this way, but these are examples of what I and those around me (some of whom have had kids play before and were just as shocked as I was) had to listen to this past weekend. To the mom behind me and to the left, if you want to complain about someone taking an extra step or those elbows, how about next year you take the initiative to become certified to be a referee? The refs, who are usually high-school students, are required to take classes on how to referee the kids’ games. They aren’t going to call every single travel or foul unless it’s blatantly obvious. If they did, the games would last forever. To the grandparents who are there to see their granddaughter play, it is not polite to call out some girl on the floor when she fouls your grandchild. Seriously, these are kids who are trying to play their best, and they do not need you yelling specifically at them. Actually, there is no reason to yell like that at all. To the uncle: You were the worst, sitting there on the front row yelling at the refs. If my brother acted like that, I would ask him to leave. Coaches, remember your girls are young and learning. You are there to be an example to both the kids and the adults. Being smart to the refs is like saying it is OK for the parents to act the way they are.

Dear Editor,
A few months ago, I read in the newspaper that Louisburg would soon allow Sunday liquor sales. I felt this new law would take away from our small-town charm. I called the county clerk’s office and received the necessary information needed to file a petition to send the issue to vote. I was also advised to seek private legal counsel. With a little over a month before the deadline, I researched petitions on the Internet, composed mine, had it reviewed by a former mayor, then dropped it off at the county clerk’s office.

Three days later. I received a letter stating my petition didn’t contain the exact legal wording for the issue. The letter stated in quotes what was to be written and suggested private legal counsel. I corrected the petition and resubmitted it. Again, three days later, I received a letter.

Dear editor,

You may have read the article about Louisburg’s two Horizon Award winners. On Jan. 15, Sarah Smith and Jenna Jones were surprised with a call from Diane DeBacker, interim Kansas education commissioner, informing them of their selection as outstanding first-year teachers. This is quite an honor for Sarah, Jenna and the district. These young educators are the future for our students, and we need to foster their development.

However, the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the economy of the state may force us to release some of our newest educators. This would be a travesty for the Louisburg School District, which has worked tirelessly in past years to build a strong, vibrant school community.
