1928-2010
Helen Earline Murray, 82, Paola, died Feb. 18, 2010, at her home.
Earline was born Feb. 14, 1928, in Kansas City, Kan., to Thomas Earl and Helen Marguerite Brown. She was a member of the 1945 class at North Kansas City High School, where she was a class officer, cheerleader and homecoming queen. After school, she was a secretary at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
On March 16, 1949, she married Gene Murray in Kansas City, Mo., where she worked as a medical transcriptionist and where they lived until they moved to Paola in 1954. There they raised a family of four children.
In 1969, they purchased a radio and television retail business in Paola, which they renamed Murray Radio and TV. She worked there until they sold the business in 1991. She became the full-time store manager when she and Gene started a cable television operation in Paola in 1972. Paola Cable TV eventually expanded to include Spring Hill, Osawatomie, La Cygne, Louisburg and Drexel, Mo. It was sold in 1986.
She was in charge of the reading program when Head Start began in Paola in the 1960s. She was a former Third Ward Committeewoman for the Democratic Party, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Miami County Hospital Auxiliary.

Wilbur Dean Whitaker, 89, Paola, died Feb. 12, 2010, at North Point Skilled Nursing Center.
He was born June 17, 1920, in Louisburg to Riley Dean and Freda Kircher Whitaker. He grew up in the Louisburg area and graduated from Louisburg High School in 1936.

Betty Ann Moyer Chatfield, 92, died Feb. 14, 2010, at the Foxwood Springs Care Center in Raymore, Mo.
Betty was born Dec. 13, 1917, at 1515 Appleton Avenue in Independence (Englewood), Mo., the second child of John Calvin Moyer Sr. and Clara Elizabeth Corbin.
She and her brothers and sister were raised to adulthood in Englewood. She graduated from Northeast High School in Independence in 1936.

Madilynne C. “Lynne” Long, 82, Louisburg, died Feb. 11, 2010.
Lynne lived in Louisburg for the past 53 years. She was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Gloucester, Mass., to Fred and Mary Rogers Blatchford.
She was united in marriage to Thomas R. “Ray” Long on Oct. 8, 1946. He preceded her in death.

1942-2010
Ron Stuteville, 67, Paola, died Feb. 4, 2010, at his home.
He was born Oct. 19, 1942, in Paola to Lola DeWeese and Lon Skeens Jr. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Leon Stuteville, from an early age in the Stilwell community. The family moved early in 1960 to a farm east of La Cygne. He attended Stilwell schools for 11½ years and his last semester at La Cygne Rural High School where he graduated with the class of 1960. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy in June 1960 where he served aboard the USS Blue. Upon his discharge in September 1963, he returned to La Cygne.
He was married to Artie White on April 16, 1965, at the La Cygne Christian Church. They made their home in Kansas City, Kan., until June 1969 when they moved to their current home in Paola. They are the parents of three children, Shawn, Shannon and Cadi Anne.
He worked in various jobs over the years until failing health forced his retirement. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad and in the construction business. In January 1980, Ron and Artie purchased the Paola Taxi Service, and in 1985, they purchased the coin laundry across the street from their home. They still own and operate both. In 1968, he attended the Missouri Auction School to become an auctioneer. Several years later, he and a friend operated a small auction business on South Silver Street in Paola.
