Velma Coate, 79, Paola, died Aug. 28, 2010. Survivors include two daughters, Pam Ewan of Paola and Donetta Saville of Olathe. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church of Paola. Services will follow at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Penwell-Gabel Paola Chapel, (913) 294-2372. Services will be Wednesday in Newkirk, Okla., at Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.

Maxine L. Wood, 84, Louisburg, died Aug. 23, 2010, at Louisburg Care Center after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born April 9, 1926, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Pierce Roy and Hattie M. Bryan.

She was united in marriage to Earl Wood on June 6, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan.

Peggy Louise Rice, 83, Ottawa, died Aug. 17, 2010, at Ottawa Retirement Village.

Peggy was born April 20, 1927, in Le Loup, Kan., to Walter and Josephine Coffman McMillen. She attended Le Loup grade school and graduated from Wellsville High School with the class of 1945.

She was baptized in the Le Loup Methodist Church at age 7.alt

Harley Emerson Keeton, 87, a lifetime resident of Paola, died Aug. 20, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leavenworth.

He was widely known in the community as an advocate for veterans, senior citizens and Freemasonry. He was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, and he donated his body to medical research.

He was born May 16, 1923, on a family farm northeast of Paola to Charley and Ada Weaver Keeton.
