Austin Hood has opened up a plethora of opportunities for himself in just seven days. alt

After traveling with Team Kansas to the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Tournament, Hood came home with a national title in freestyle and a runner-up spot in Greco-Roman. In the process, he earned two All-American honors and he caught the eyes of a lot of college wrestling coaches.

College coaches flock to Fargo, N.D. ever year to catch some of the best high school wrestlers in the country and Hood put on quite a display. He finished with a 19-1 record in 20 matches over those seven days and came back with a couple of trophies and a sore collar bone.

All the pain was worth it after Hood came home with his second national crown in just a three month span. He won the folkstyle title in April before adding the freestyle crown to it last week.

Since winning the state crown in February he has become one of top wrestlers in the state to one of the top in the country in just a short period of time. Yet, there is so much ahead of Hood before college even comes calling.

WELLSVILLE — The Louisburg Activities Recreation Association (LARA) 12-and-under baseball team ended its season on a positive note during the Wellsville Shootout on July 18. alt

The players, many of whom competed separate from one another in state competitions outside of Louisburg earlier in the month, banded together and took hold of the tournament. Nine teams from Wellsville, Gardner, Spring Hill, Olathe, Lawrence, Louisburg, and even St. Louis, provided a tough field.

Louisburg was the No. 3 seed in the single elimination tournament and won five straight games to capture the tournament crown with a finals victory over Wellsville.

The team had been apart for nearly two months, as many of the players took part in traveling squads, and had just seven practices to prepare for the Wellsville tournament.

“The entire team hit the ball very well and every player at some point in the tournament made a great key play,” Louisburg coach Dan Hankinson said. “The boys played virtually errorless ball and that is what it takes to win against these types of teams.”

Every one got into the action for Louisburg on offense. Alex Dunn and Korbin Hankinson each had home runs for the tournament, while Dunn, Nick Hull and Devyn Small each recorded triples.

Sam Guetterman, Joseph Hannah, Austin Henderson, Lane Mecum, Thomas SanAgustin and Colton Smith all had hits for the Wildcats, while Dunn, Hankinson, and Ethan Plager each chipped in a few doubles.

Austin Hood wasn’t satisfied with a measly state title.

Hood, who won the 112-pound Kansas state crown last season, wanted to make a name for himself on more of a national level. The Louisburg junior started with a title at the ASICS Folkstyle Nationals in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He has since progressed to something even bigger. Hood traveled with Team Kansas to Fargo, N.D. to take part in the seven-day ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Tournament last week.

Hood came home Saturday with a national championship trophy and a double All-American honor in tow. alt

The Louisburg junior defeated Michigan’s Jacob Schmitt to win the 105-pound cadet freestyle national title and offered up some revenge after falling in the Greco-Roman finals to Schmitt just a few days earlier.

“I was really hoping to get that triple crown,” Hood said of winning national titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle. “To do that on a national level would just be the ultimate. I was disappointed that I lost in Greco, but to get a national title and get some revenge in the freestyle was awesome. I was pretty proud.”

Hood defeated Schmitt 0-1, 5-0 and 1-1 in the best of three periods. Hood recorded the final point in the third period to earn the tiebreaker.

It was a long week for Hood. Between the two tournaments, he wrestled 20 matches in seven days and went 19-1 against some of the nation’s best high school wrestlers. New Louisburg wrestling coach Richard Fergola, who is also a coach with Team Kansas, guided his future pupil throughout.

Scoring runs wasn’t much of a problem for the Louisburg 10-and-under All-Star baseball team during the July 9 and 10 Cal Ripken District 7 tournament. alt

The Wildcat squad pounded out 22 runs in two games, but it wasn’t enough as it lost two games to Ottawa, the last coming on a 17-14 high-scoring affair July 10 in Paola.

Louisburg opened the tournament July 9 against Ottawa and found itself down several runs to start, but the Wildcats put together a big rally to cut it to a run, but it was as close they would come in a 9-8 loss. Desmond Doles earned MVP honors for Louisburg and Ryan Adams earned the WOW award for his play in the field.

Ottawa fell to Paola in the second game and got another meeting Louisburg the next evening. The two teams combined for 31 runs, but the Wildcats saw their season end in the loss. Ben Minster walked away with the MVP honors for Louisburg, while Garrett Caldwell earned the WOW award.

Paola then went on to defeat Ottawa 6-1 in the championship game and eventually Paola made the state finals, but results were unavailable at press time.
