Civil Defense Instructions for Forest Fires

If you are outside

Do not burn garbage or dry grass and branches during the summer months.

Do not light outdoor barbecues in the woods or in areas with dry grass in the summer.

Avoid work that could cause a fire (eg welding, using a wheel or other tool that produces sparks).

Do not throw away lit cigarettes.

Garbage should not be left in the forest. There is a risk of fire.

Respect access restrictions during high risk periods.

If your house is in or near a forest

Create a fire zone around the house by clearing dry grass and leaves, pine needles and branches in a radius of at least 10 meters.

Prune trees up to a height of 3 meters depending on their age and condition.

Remove dead branches from trees and shrubs.

Branches should not touch house walls, ceilings and balconies. Prune them at least 5 meters away from the house.

Thin out woody plants so that the branches of one tree are at least 3 meters from the branches of another. For even more protection, we remove trees and shrubs around the building to a distance of at least 10 meters, as the clearance of natural vegetation imposed to protect buildings does not in any way conflict with the provisions of the Forestry Act.

Do not install plastic gutters or pipes in the walls of the house.

Do not install shutters made of combustible materials on windows and balcony doors.

Make sure that the covers on the chimneys and vents of the house are made of non-combustible material to prevent sparks from entering.

Do not keep flammable materials near the house.

Store firewood in covered and protected areas.

Do not store unsealed fuel tanks near the house.

Obtain and maintain proper fire extinguishers.

Equip yourself with an irrigation hose up to the area you wish to protect.

Equip yourself with a water tank, a simple pump that works without electricity, and a water hose.

Once you see the fire

Call the fire service immediately (telephone 199) and give clear information:

– Your location and exact location,
– Location, exact point and direction of fire.
– Type of plant to be burned.

If the fire approaches your home

be quiet.

Move all flammable materials around the building to covered and protected areas.

Close all passages (chimneys, windows, doors, etc.) so that the lava does not penetrate into the house.

Shut off natural gas and liquid fuel supplies inside and outside the home.

Collect awnings on balconies and windows.

Make access to fire engines easier by opening the garden gate.

On the outside of the house, place a ladder against the direction of the fire so that direct access to the roof is possible.

Connect the water pipes and spread them around the perimeter of the house.

If visibility is reduced, turn on its interior and exterior lights and look for smoke.

After the fire is over

Leave the house and put out any remaining small fires immediately.

At least every 48 hours, at regular intervals, check the perimeter of the house and exterior areas for expansion.

If the fire reaches your home

Do not leave the building until it is absolutely certain that you can escape.

Don’t get in the car. A house made of non-combustible materials has a higher probability of survival than a car in smoke and flames.

If you are at home:

– Close doors and windows tightly.
– Seal cracks with a damp cloth to prevent smoke from entering.
– Remove the curtains from the windows.
– Move furniture near windows and exterior doors into rooms.
– Close intermediate doors to slow fire spread.
– Fill the bathtub, sink and buckets with spare water.
– Gather everyone in one room.
– Make sure you have a flashlight and spare batteries in case of a power outage.

If your house is wooden, stay in a built house.

If an orderly evacuation from the area is ordered, strictly follow the instructions of the authorities and the directions given to you.
