16 people belonging to the same family were found dead at home

At least 16 members of the same family were found dead in their home in an isolated, mountainous community in southern Haiti, a local official said.

The death occurred a day after the family attended a funeral, local media reported.

The bodies were found in a house in Seguin, 50 kilometers south of the capital Port-au-Prince.

The causes of death of 16 people are not clear. Residents of the area told Reuters It can be group poisoning.

Police and medical personnel were sent to the area to investigate the matter.

The deaths do not appear to be linked to the activities of armed gangs that have grown in strength in recent years, thanks in part to the money they make from extortion or smuggling. Last year alone, the actions of these gangs claimed the lives of nearly 5,000 people, according to a United Nations report.
