Shock in Britain: King Charles is diagnosed with cancer

Buckingham Palace announced Monday that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer.

“During King's recent hospital surgery for a benign prostate enlargement, a separate concern was noted,” according to the email report.

“Subsequent diagnostic tests identified a form of cancer.”

Buckingham Palace did not say what type of cancer he was diagnosed with or what stage it was at.

A week after discharge

The news comes a week after Kate and King Charles were both discharged from a private London clinic after private procedures. The royal underwent an enlarged prostate “corrective procedure”, while Kate underwent an unspecified abdominal procedure on January 17 for unspecified surgery.

“His Majesty has today started a program of regular treatment during which his doctors have advised him to postpone his public duties,” the statement added.

Buckingham Palace did not say what type of cancer he was diagnosed with or what stage it was at.

King Charles ascended the throne in a coronation ceremony in May after the death of his mother, Elizabeth II, last year. Elizabeth reigned until her death in September 2022 at the age of 96. He was Britain's longest reigning monarch with 70 years on the throne.

Meanwhile, Kate is still recovering, but her husband Prince William is set to return to royal duties on Wednesday, attending the London Air Ambulance Gala Dinner.

Kensington Palace previously said the Princess of Wales was unlikely to return to her royal duties before Easter on March 31 this year. No date has been set for the king's return to duty.
